Where to eat for world food day

The 16th of October is World food day. There’s no better way to celebrate this special day than with some good food from all over the world.

A bit of Scandinavia in the heart of Antwerp

Nordica 31 describes itself as a micro bakery, food and coffee bar. You will find typical Scandinavian flavors or Nordic street food like smørrebrød, lobster rolls and the well-known kötbullar, aka Swedish meatballs. One of their best selling products is the cinnamon bun. The owner of Nordica 31, Lisa, came up with this idea during her travels to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Canada. Their indoor space is small, but you can sit outside like a real Scandinavian. The people in the north love being outdoors, even in winter. Just order a hot coffee and you’re good to go.

Belgium’s finest croquettes

In a beautiful old mansion from the 18th century on the Groentemarkt in Gent, you are able to enjoy traditional croquettes like you’ve never tasted them before. There are more than 20 different types of croquettes that you can combine with delicious salads, fries or bread. You can find the craziest tastes, from a croquette with pizza filling to one with lobster. This year on the 9th of October, in honour of the ‘national croquettes day’, they organized a real food competition to find the best ‘croquettes eater’ in the country. The participants were given thirty minutes to eat as many cheese croquettes as possible. The winner ate 23 croquettes. Do you think that you can beat him? Then there’s one address you have to visit on the 9th of October: Chapeluur.

A plate full of colours

After the success of the Lebanese street food in Antwerp, Sumac decided to open another restaurant in Plein Public in Brussels. Experience the feeling of being in Beirut for one evening. They serve mostly vegetarian dishes, lovely plates to share, Flemish classics with a Lebanese twist and the freshest mezze bursting with middle eastern flavors right out of the Josper woodfire oven.

La bella Italia

For a more fancy Italian dinner night, you have to try Danieli Il Divino. The restaurant is known for its ambiance and top location for 25 years already. It is located in the former coach house of Kasteel den Brandt. The kitchen serves Italian classics like pasta and pizzas. But they also serve more fancy dishes like pane Sardo or flat bread from Sardinia with buffalo ricotta, black truffle & arugula salad or a delicious tower of King Krab. Besides the restaurant, they also have a vintage bar on the first floor. Ideal for a fresh aperitif or digestive after dinner.

Experience the Jewish culture

Eating at Hoffy’s is a real experience. You do not only get to experience Jewish food, but also the culture. The Hoffman family has been running the Jewish restaurant for 30 years. They serve kosher dishes for both meat and fish lovers as well as vegetarians, using local products. While getting served, you get to know what it means to eat kosher. Everyone is welcome regardless of their religion. Only on Saturdays no one can come eat since it’s their Sabbath, a day of rest for the Jewish community.

The Asian cuisine

Lucy Chang already had some setbacks. First a fire that destroyed one of their restaurants in Wilrijk and then it got declared bankrupt on the first of July. Luckily, founder Peter Michaels bought back the five bankrupt branches with a new company, Uncle Chang, so that the five restaurants remain open. There’s something for everyone. For the small eaters, you have a large variety of dim sums and spring rolls. For the ones who are really hungry, you have 14 different kinds of wok to chose from and for the kids there’s a custom menu. If you still have some place left, don’t forget to try one of their special desserts.
